A short overview of the rules based on information from the police (MUP) and AMSS. Regulations change from time to time, so the sources are listed below.
When it applies
The period is 1 November to 1 April, but the obligation applies when there is snow, ice or black ice on the road. The date alone does not make winter tires mandatory on a dry road - but winter conditions can arrive without warning, so it is safer to be ready in advance.
What you need to have
- Winter-use tires on all four wheels, not just the driven axle.
- An M+S marking (or another winter-use marking) on the tires.
- Tread depth of at least 4 mm.
- Snow chains or other traction devices (for at least two driven wheels) carried in the vehicle. Using them is mandatory where a road sign requires it.
What about all-season tires?
All-season tires are still allowed in Serbia if they carry the M+S marking and have enough tread. In harsh winter conditions they are still a compromise compared with proper winter tires.
Fines
Fine amounts are set by law and change over time, so we do not list them here. Check current figures with AMSS or the police (MUP).
